Thailand

Despite Thailand being a relatively prosperous nation, there are pockets of extreme deprivation due to its close proximity with countries where people are forced to flee in search of safety

Where we work

Thailand is currently ranked 79 out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI). This is because of large numbers of vulnerable and displaced people from Myanmar arriving in Thailand who are suffering from acute food insecurity. Population rates in Thailand have soared in the last century, from 10 million to almost 70 million today.

Thailand is a country in southeast Asia, located at the centre of the Indochinese Peninsula and bordered by Myanmar (formerly Burma) to the north and west; Laos to the north and east; Cambodia to the southeast, and Malaysia to the south. With a population of almost 70 million people, Thailand is the world’s 50th largest country by land mass and the 22nd most-populous country.

Thai people are extremely hard-working and typical workers have very few ‘vacation days’, however, this does nothing to dampen their spirits as the inhabitants of Thailand are renowned for their general friendliness and helpfulness. The country is known across the world as the Land of Smiles. Thailand’s name in the Thai language is Prathet Thai, which means ‘Land of the Free.’

The country is also home to some truly modern wonders, such as the world’s largest gold buddha statue (Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon); the largest crocodile farm, and one of the tallest hotel buildings, Baiyoke Tower II.

Mary's Meals in Thailand

We have been providing Mary’s Meals in Thailand since 2008. We support schools in Rangsit, Sattahip, Kanchanaburi and Samut Sakhon, all located towards the southern tip of the country, near Bangkok.  Our school feeding programme is delivered in partnership with the Living Water Foundation and largely supports migrant families from Myanmar.

The schools we support are located predominantly in areas where migrant families have settled – 97,000 people are currently claiming refuge in Thailand, mostly from Myanmar. Our programmes encourage school attendance, shielding children from potentially exploitative situations whilst their parents and guardians struggle to find work.

We are currently feeding 368 children in four schools in Thailand. Typically, the school meals we serve are chicken or pork with rice and vegetables.
