Where we work

Benin is currently ranked 158 out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI). Food insecurity, low-incomes, malnutrition and gender inequality are just some of the key challenges facing impoverished people in Benin. Half the population of Benin are currently living below the International Poverty Line ($1.90 per day). As a result, more than a third of young children suffer from the effects of chronic malnutrition and around 52% of primary school aged children in Benin do not complete primary education.

All these daily struggles culminate in the fact that over two-thirds of the population of Benin are unable to read and write.

Life in Benin

Benin, a French-speaking West African nation, is the birthplace of the "voodoo" religion and home to the former Dahomey Kingdom (1600-1900). The official language is French, but there is a diverse range of more than 50 indigenous languages. The majority of its population lives on the southern coastline of the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea. Benin is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east.

Benin's main export is cotton, with a smaller trade in fruit, nuts and oil seeds.
